Galileo caved in, Bruno didn't
Say what one will, Bruno didn't change his views despite being
imprisoned and tortured by the Inquisition for seven years before
being burned at the stake.
Though the main reasons for his being treated thusly were
his radical religious views, it didn't help in the late 1500s to
say that there were an infinity of suns and worlds with life
on each of them.
"Perhaps you, my judges, pronounce this sentence against me with greater fear than I receive it."

Both men "suffered" from not knowing when to shut their mouths,
especially in the face of authority. Progress isn't made by sheep,
anyway.
