My wife and I went to the theatre in Pittsburgh, Claire Bloom was doing a one-actor production of "The Women of Shakespeare". I sent Sandy in to pick up the tickets while I found a place to park. When I finally got to the box office, I found she was talking to a handsome fellow, and she said "This gentleman's date couldn't make it, so he offered me her ticket while I was waiting in line. You just need to buy one." Realizing the tickets were numbered by seat assignment, I replied, "Thank you sir, just give me your ticket so my wife and I can sit together, and I will buy you another one." He complied, and I did so.
It wasn't till intermission that I realized that the guy, not realizing the pretty lady in line was not alone, had tried to pick up my old lady with the old "my date can't make it" ploy. We wound up up with terrific seats, he watched the show alone from a very bad one. I found him in the lobby and offered to buy him a drink for his generosity, but he just looked me straight in the eye, smiled, and politely declined.
