Off Topic » in reply to Man knowing the universe is the universe knowing itself.

I believe the best Man can do is become aware of a bit of the neighborhood.

I had to think about your post. It seems to imply that Man is the equivalent of the Universe in importance, or the only thing that matters, OR more likely that Man is the brains of the Universe much the way our brain is the thinking organ of the body. The latter is a bit more humble.

I think that Man has become aware of some small part of his immediate surroundings. Most of it we don't know. Dark matter and energy are apparently much more of this Universe than the part we can see, for instance.

There is also the before, after and beyond we don't have any clue about.

We seem to be like a rat which was born into a basement, explored a bit and knows his basement pretty well. There's the flooded part he doesn't really understand, and he's looked outside but barely ventured there. And he knows there are more floors above from peeking up an elevator shaft, but knows nothing about them. He surmises that maybe 80% of the building is above his basement but he can't see it.

He may "know" more about his obserable Universe than anything else he's around, but he doesn't know a lot.
