A woman was killed in the Florida Keys today when a large stingray jumped in front of her speeding powerboat, colliding with her and instantly killing both the fish and the woman. The woman was apparently not stung by the ray's stinger, but simply succumbed to the collision. Right after Australian TV personality Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray on the Great Barrier Reef, a boater in Ft Lauderdale barely survived severe injury by being stung by a sting ray which leapt into his boat.
Rays often leap from the water to avoid predators, or to dislodge parasites. Although armed with a defensive poisonous, barbed stinger, rays are not aggressive animals and usually are quite docile, even around divers.
