I have an uncle by marriage (he married my father's sister's daughter) who was a member of the Hitler Youth. Fortunately, he was too young to be drafted into the Wehrmacht. Dragging kids into political and militaristic rituals serves two functions, it indoctrinates them with the regime's values and infiltrates a little informer in every household. As an added bonus, it can deflect any adult criticism of this practice and make it sound like an attack on the children, thereby making those critics sound unpatriotic, if not treasonous. The Nazis had the Hiter Jugend, the Communists the "Young Pioneers". The practice seems intimately associated with fascism of both the Right and Left.
When I was kid, I wanted to join the Boy Scouts. To my dismay, my mother absolutely forbade it. "I will not let any one put my son into a uniform, surround him with flags and have him marching around and saluting like some strutting little Nazi."
At the time, I was crushed. Now I see the terrible wisdom of it. My father fought in World War II, and she had to wait home alone for four long years before he came home.
