Look, I'm an independent who strongly leans to the Democrats. My favorable opinion of McCain is based a lot on the way he took on the Christian right in 2000 (not to mention reaching across the isle and taking on Bush a few times). Sure he's worked to patch things up with the Fundies since then but they still haven't really forgiven him, as witnessed by the the right's initial outrage at his locking up the nomination.

And any ministers McCain may have seen, while maybe controversial, never said "God Damn America" to their congregation. Republicans are licking their chops: An Obama vs McCain election will be about patriotism.
