This is going to be interesting to see how the German people react.
While the government has harsh laws against hate speech and symbols which we would consider a violation of free speech rights, most germans I knew felt it was better than the alternative. I lived there in the mid 90's and the DVU (DeutchesVolksUnion) which was the party of the neonazis had been quite active in placing posters that were quite flagrant violations of the anti-hate laws. I couldn't follow the politics well enough then (no internet and a pretty rudimentary command of the language), but I could see people visibly cringe when the "Vote DVU" signs were so visible.
On the other hand, the right to privacy ranks up there in importance to Germans like the 1st and 2nd amendments do in the US. The Germans have had a longstanding beef with Google over privacy issues to the point where if you Streetview streets in Germany, large parts of buildings are pixelated to meet the privacy demands of the complainers.
Its going to be quite a test as these two ideals come into conflict.
Its been 20 years since I lived in Germany, but even then, there was a lot of resentment for the Ausslander. Due to the country being an asylum nation, there were whole apartment blocks of Muslims, Russians Poles, Turks, etc. One law that we often heard reference to was that if you could claim German heritage, you could be allowed entry and eventually citizenship. Because of this a lot of Russians whose ancestors were German were living in the country. A common saying among even mainstream Germans was "They may have owned a German Shepherd at one time, but they aren't Germans". I can only imagine the tension has increased in 20 years.
