Speed at launch

I remember an interview of Joe Allen on a dutch TV explaining (while waiting for the april 10th 1981 missed launch opportunity) that the shuttle would liftoff very fast and that nobody would have to worry about this because it was supposed to happen that way. I was quite surprised to hear that as I remembered seeing Moonraker in 79 and every previous real manned launch was slow.
