A few "movers and shakers" in this world are sometimes fond of telling us that libraries and bookstores just aren't where it's at for books any more.
I reject that completely (and, judging by the crowds as libraries and bookstores, so do a lot of other people.)
There's still nothing like wandering the shelves, letting things fall on your eye, and making discoveries. Sure, you can sometimes do this on Amazon, but not in the same way at all. And bookstores and libraries smell better.
Yesterday I was in the library, fishing the shelves, and saw a Peter S. Beagle book I hadn't read, or even heard of, The Line Between. To me, this is like finding money on the sidewalk.
The book was a collection of short stories, including a sequel to "The Last Unicorn" ("Two Hearts,") a prequel to "Innkeeper's Song," and, believe it or not, an excellent Sherlock Holmes story! The other stories were great, too, and Beagle hints that he's expanding several of them (including "Two Hearts") into future books!
Like finding folding money on the sidewalk.
