After Googling "private sector nuclear fusion"
Google the words in the subject line and one gets a lot of stuff about ITER, but also a few relevant articles as well, such as this and this.
I don't have the background to evaluate the issue. What do you guys think about private sector efforts related to nuclear fusion?
(Seems to me that the question of whether or not to undertake the work would be a no-brainer...albeit an unusually expensive one.)
