Nuevo Mexico was officially part of Tejas, but the settlements were so far removed from San Antonio (or anywhere else) that they developed their own identity. That's what happened to the Republic's borders the first time (so I've read).

I don't think Santa Fe is going to be any easier to persuade now.

Southwestern Kansas, on the other hand... maybe.
