I own a great fantasy comic called "Proposition Player" where the idea was that various gods gained power not just from believers, but from the number of souls consigned to them in the afterlife.
The comic got fun when a mortal found this out, and applied the concept of investment and leverage.
I could easily see the gods doing heavy advertising.
