Space/Science » in reply to re: Why it took centuries to ACCEPT that Earth went around the Sun

It wasn't just the religious authorities

Most people did not accept the idea of an Earth flinging about
in space because they had no concept of being on a planet,
let alone a body that moved at all.

To anyone without any real knowledge of the heavens, it certainly
looks like everything in the skies is going around us. And if Earth
were zipping through the void or spinnnig like a top, certainly the
ones who live on it would feel such disturbances.

Add to this that most people thought the Sun was a rather small
body, if they did not already think it was some kind of god, and
the stars were just tiny lights stuck in a big black dome above
their heads.

They just didn't know and I am not going to fault an ancestry
that didn't have our thousands of years of hindsight. I find it
amazing that a few smart guys did figure out as much as they
did in ancient times.

Look at today - even with all our knowledge, so many people
prefer not to think about our place in the Universe and a lot of
them still don't know what some of the smart ancients knew.
