For years all the Apollo 8 crew members claimed to take the famous
color shot of Earthrise over the Moon, but it took Andrew Chaikin in
1994 with his book Man on the Moon (which became a great HBO
series four years later) to determine it was Bill Anders who actually
took the photograph.
Environmentalists can say whatever they like, but it took the
space program and those distant shots of our planet to really
bring home our place in the Universe.
