re: Investors Business Daily editorial - is wrong

My council didn't have elections this time around - I would have voted Conservative. Were I in London, I would have voted for Boris Johnson.

That article however - is very wrong

"Prime Minister Gordon Brown also imposed a 10% payroll tax that was so ill-received it drove angry fishmongers in the Labour stronghold of Bury (now turned Tory) to yell "Brown Out" until the tax was withdrawn."

No no no no. He TOOK AWAY the 10% tax rate, got rid of it all together, and dropped the 22% rate to 20%. For higher earners, it was a bonus. For very low earners, it was not. I'm an above average earner ( not by that much ) and my monthly pay post-tax is up by about £35 as a result. About the price of 2/3rds of a tank of gas.

FWIW - local council elections are always something of a protest vote and a general election sees much less shift away from the current government. If you add up the votes from Thursday local election - you get Labour in 3rd, just. That wouldn't happen if there were general election- but I do think that Labour would be ousted if there were a general election right now. It's almost nothing to do with policy or 'left' or 'right' - it's about bullshit - and how much of it we seem to get from central government.
