It's not that Chamberlain talked to Hitler.
It's that he thought his talk amounted to a hill of beans. He waved that piece of paper around like it was a real accomplishment. He was used as a tool by Hitler and was extremely proud of it. Kind of like the nuclear negotiators dealing with Iran right now. It's just a smoke screen for Iran to buy time until they have the weapons they need to tell the rest of the world to take a leap.
