There maybe a useful, safe, even profitable winged spacecraft
design sometime in the future...within 10 to 1000 years maybe?
The HOTOL design was ahead of its time 20 years ago.
We might have to wait at least another 10 years before material technology, scramjet technology, and LOX extraction/conversion
technology from ordinary air become viable.
But I'm pessimistic; I think we'll have to wait at least 100 for a HOTOL type hypersonic horizontal takeoff-to-orbit winged craft becomes possible.
But you never know.
I would also think that an air-launched manned spacecraft is both
possible and useful considering that specially designed wings can convert drag into lift in the altitude range from say between 10 kilometers to 40 kilometers high, in the velocity range from say 500kph to 6000kph.
BTW, the wings can be jettisoned above 40km altitude, reducing unnecessary weight, when the spacecraft begins to climb steepl.y

Von Braun's concept? No!... Current Shuttle design? No!...Future design?...
