It makes sense I guess. I just like the idea of using the MER chassis as the standard for Mars probes. Mass produce them to drive down the cost, and send at least two every window of opportunity. Every model year could have improvements added as technology developed, better solar panels, batteries, cameras, transmitters, etc. I whole series of different experiments could be developed for them.
