Now that you mention it, I'm hard pressed to remember exactly when the first video was sent from a manned spacecraft. Apollo 7? No later than 8, 'course, that was historic.
Up until Apollo, all anybody had was air-to-ground audio, and in some ways it was like listening to radio dramas from the 40s--a lot depended on your imagination. The TV coverage tried to spice it up with visual props for the air-to-ground soundtrack, plastic models, little astronaut dolls, quaint 60s style animations and graphics, even mocked-up spacecraft cockpits. I was able to con my parents into letting me stay home from school during space flights, and I'd spend hours in the garage watching the coverage. Set up my dad's reel-to-reel tape recorder, hung the microphone over the TV speaker, and recorded reel after reel of that air-to-ground.
Most people thought I was the weirdest kid they'd ever met.
They were right.
