Geek Speak » in reply to Robert, Is there a limit on post length?

I assume so

Sorry, I'm not trying to sound sarcastic. The software's so old that I can't be entirely sure, but if you encountered a length limit, then I guess I must've put one in. Makes sense for a lot of reasons, first security: Limiting submission length is a standard technique to guard against buffer overflow attacks and denial-of-service attacks that involve trying to post a huge amount of data to swamp a server.

A secondary reason is to limit the length of Web pages to a reasonable size so that they download in a reasonable amount of time. Your posts on CE were about the right length for Web pages, so I'm not sure you'd be better off string it all on to one very long page.

BTW, I experimented with archiving that thread as a PDF, using Acrobat's Web capture feature. It missed a couple of graphics for unknowable reasons, so I didn't say anything about it. If you want a copy of the thread for yourself, I can always send you the raw XML thread file. Each post on the thread is inside, in a raw as-submitted form, and in a form after HTML was added by the system. Lemme know (send an email; you've changed addresses several times, so I'm not sure I have a current one).
