I think I have the most dangerous idea of all.

That there is a reason for everything, but a purpose to nothing.

The universe is not totally random and chaotic, although most of it does happen to appear that way, or at least, functions that way. There is pattern, but no order; there are rules, but there is no Law. It is not placed here for our benefit, and neither is it dependent on our recognition of it. We are brief sparks of consciousness in an endless, eternal sea of indifference. Outside of us, irrelevance and causality, complexity and oblivion, co-exist simultaneously, independent of each other.

But there is a basic asymmetry in the universe and in our relation to it. We have one tiny advantage that makes all the difference for us. We are aware of it, but it is indifferent to us. We must never forget this, on pain of losing our very existence, our individuality is all that matters. We can't have it both ways: we must always remember that in a universe where anything is possible, nothing can ever be unique.
