What has NATO landed itself in?

I was listening to a local talk radio show,
and during a newsbreak came the stunning news that
three Taliban fighters caught in Afghanistan, recently, confessed
that the Taliban fighters are receiving direct aid
from the Pakistani Army.

The Taliban prisoners said that the Pakistani Army was
providing a large number of Taliban fighters weapons, training,
lodging and even money [as much as 500 dollars per month
per Taliban combatant].

Why is NATO in Afghanistan with no end-game strategy?
Why has it no plans to carry out hot-pursuit of the enemy
into Pakistan?
Why is it in Afghanistan now except perhaps to provide security for the construction of
a 1000 mile long gas pipeline from Turkestan through that country to an
Indian Ocean port, with an oil pipeline to follow?

The NATO strategy in Afghanistan is starting to smell a lot like the futile, limited counterinsurgency
warfare fought in Vietnam, with too much reliance on forward fire-bases, airstrikes, and technical
gizmos.
