Oxidizers

Will MECA be able to do anything to identify the assumed strongly oxidizing agents in the martian regolith? Or for that matter, are the results they announced today consistent with those conclusions? I'm much better with physics than chemistry so I'm not sure what these findings do for the big picture.

Assuming MECA hasn't thrown the oxidizer story out the window, you'd think the investigators might want to be a bit more cautious before saying you could grow asparagus in it.

Likewise, don't underestimate the importance that trace minerals can have on plants and the animals that consume them. If the regolith isn't strongly acidic or hypersaline that's a start, but again, don't count your asparagus spears quite yet.
