No doubt.

Their target constituents seem to regularly do a low-level reformat of their own brains on almost a daily basis, rewriting history and their own views in such a way that not only do they hold new opinions completely reversed from their former ones, but they honestly believe that they have always held these opinions. In a nation with enough such people, the entire "Ministry of Truth" could be two guys in a cubicle. It would be that easy.

I have little doubt that the Democrats could sell these people on the idea that the success in Iraq was due only to them. Whether they get away with it remains to be seen.

On a related theme, look at the quote from the New Yorker:

The improved conditions can be attributed, in increasing order of importance, to President Bush’s surge, the change in military strategy under General David Petraeus, the turning of Sunni tribes against Al Qaeda, the Sadr militia’s unilateral ceasefire, and the great historical luck that brought them all together at the same moment.

Yeah. Sheer luck.

In a year, "President Bush's surge" will have been quietly dropped off this list, or, considering what's going on now, have been renamed "the Obama surge."

That they can still mention "Sadr's cease fire" as a factor in the face of the events in Iraq of the past couple of months shows the level to which they can create their own little reality. Or maybe the term "stuck on stupid" applies.
