never considered it an oath
it is simply a creed that you either agree with or disagree with in principle. You can see from the answers below that it is contentious for some but your response seems reasonable.
Personally I subscribe to "My country right or wrong, but right or wrong, my country" with the caveat that at some point it might cease to resemble my country.
I am not a flag waving patriot but I don't pick nits with my loyalty. It is the fealty thing.
