Space/Science » in reply to STS 124 SRBs behavior

That event was harmless, but another scenario may not be.

One early risk scenario thought up for the Space Shuttles
was...What would happen if one of the solid-fuel boosters
was ignited a fraction of a second sooner...or later...than
the other solid-fuel booster at liftoff?

The answer to that hypothetical scenario is alarming.
The Space Shuttle might end up cartwheeling, tumbling
end-over-end less than a kilometer above Cape Kennedy.

The result would be tragic.
The shuttle would crash near the launchpad with its
SRB's and fueltanks still connected.
The crash debris and human remains would all be vaporized.
And NASA's manned space program would come to an end.
