I know your savings are protected by FDIC, but what savings? Your checking account too? IRAs, CDs etc? And how do you actually get your money back? Do you just keep on writing checks and making deposits as if nothing happened and the Fed makes up the shortfall? Or do you have to fill out a form and wait till some bureaucracy processes it and sends you a check? If so, what documentary evidence do you need to get reimbursed?
And what if your savings exceed the limit (I believe it's about $100K now)? Do they pro-rate any amount over the limit? If your cash is distributed among several FDIC-insured failed banks in amounts less than the limit in each: are they all insured or only the $100K limit? Are foreign banks operating branches in the US covered, for example, what if you have your stash in the Royal Bank of Canada, or the Bank of Scotland, and they go south?
I expect to win several megabucks on the Florida Lotto next month and I need to plan ahead.
So what do you do if your bank tanks?
