I finally got it...

Microdem was crashing because it needed GDAL libraries, I found them here: http://www.gisinternals.com/query.html?content=filelist&file=release-1800-x64-gdal-1-11-3-mapserver-6-4-2.zip

I installed them, and showed microdem where I had them on my computer and it opened the DEM file.

THEN I followed the tutorial I found here:
