Any suggested names, phone numbers, or email address, please?
I might be able to come up with some relevant names, if I do I will email them to you rather than post them in public, I think I know a couple of names that could be helpful on the 'Phobos as a captured asteroid' theory....
All I know on the subject is that there is debate over whether Phobos is a captured asteroid or ejecta from a collision with Mars. Phobos is a temporary moon doomed to collide with mars in about 50 million years.
I would think that if it has significant volatiles that would 1) Rule out the impact origin and 2) Make it extremely valuable for mars exploration.
At a talk I heard at Sandia on Phobos the speaker said something to the effect that either phobos is largely composed of ice, or it has a lot of empty spaces- essentially a rubble pile because of its low density. I think there is some issue about the rubble pile idea being unlikely due to the relative strength of Phobos' gravity and the tidal forces from Mars but I am unsure.
If Phobos is a bit of mars, then it is a easier target for mars material sample return I would think. I believe that the possibility that phobos has been there from the formation of mars has been ruled out, so if it is the result of an impact it could be a time capsule - a snapshot image of mars from the time of impact. (This is just my musing, you really might want Nick's opinion...)
As for temperature:
High temperatures for Phobos were measured at -4 degrees Celsius (25 degrees Fahrenheit) and lows at -112 Celsius (-170 degrees Fahrenheit). This intense heat loss is likely a result of the fine dust on Phobos' surface, unable to retain heat.
