Neither Hitler nor Castro make the choir of saints by a long shot.
Nevertheless:
During the Nuremburg war crimes trials we learned that "just following orders" is no excuse. We learned that German civilians claimed not to have known what was going on in the death camps, even though (unless one was a child or had no sense of smell) one had to know something awful was happening there.
Your friend Edith and her family showed more courage than they did, and more courage than von Braun, if we are generous and assume that he was opposed to how his designs were built and what they were used for.
It's easy for me to sit here and hope that I would show courage similar to Edith's if I were faced with similar tyranny, rather than turning away as von Braun did. I won't know unless I'm challenged, but I have picked my role models.
When leaders lead the way to evil, it's up to those they lead whether they choose to follow. In that way, we are all responsible.
