The basic ingredient in this new drug is the dye methylene blue (methylthioninium chloride, or at least a close relative). This has been around for a long time so if any new drugs develop from this research they ought not be prohibitively expensive (about the same price as statins for example). The new drug is going after the tangles of hyperphosphorylated Tau protein that form in the diseased cells; whereas most previous approaches have been to target the deposits of alpha-amyloid peptide that form around the dead and dieing nerve cells. Attempts to clear out the amyloid peptide have been fairly dismal. Interestingly there is a much rarer form of dementia that is caused by mutations in the TAU gene. I am a little puzzled that the higher dose (100mg) had less effect than the 60mg? Unfortunately new wonder drugs have an unhappy history of fizzling out when put through their paces, let's hope for everyone's sake this one pans out.

- Great news! I hate to say it...
- The key statement: "Those on rember did not experience a significant decline in their mental function over 19 months, while those on placebo got worse."
