A Physics question

First let me start off by admitting I am confused as hell about where to post this.

Dummy the answer down boys....I never even belonged to the Physics Club in school.

When I swim underwater...my eyesight appears to be 20/20....Above water it is 475/blind as a bat. Why is this?

Also...what is the theory behind bicycle gears? How does this work? All I am fully aware of is that the lower the number...the easier to climb uphill.
