re: Why it is better to stop shuttle flights when expected

Clearly from this there’s no bringing back the shuttle after the last flight in 2010. I am wondering if they are prepared for ISS emergency repairs of large outside equipment. What if one or more of the large solar panel units completely fails, or more of the moment gyros dies again. What are they planning on using to replace them? Are they going to just let the ISS gradually die piece by piece till it can’t be maintained? Are there any plans to modify the ATV to carry large items in an outside compartment so they can do this kind of maintenance? I guess it’s all a mater of money and the political will to keep the ISS going.
