Not nearly impossible enough?
Stellar mergers are pretty common in globular clusters, making all sorts of weird stars. But in the thin disk of a spiral galaxy collisions are pretty infrequent - about 1 in every 100 billion per 100 billion years. When two spirals collide the orbits of the stars get randomised and a giant elliptical forms, but the odds don't improve much so maybe one collision, maybe.
