And its not just for Buck. We can all benefit from it. If all Conservatives could nuance this issue in the same way, we wouldn't be having this discussion.
But the fact remains, this still doesn't give us the legal or moral right to institute civil policies that treat Muslims differently than we do other religions. These insights cannot be used to institute immigration controls, or the issuing of work permits, or the registering of citizens, or other constitutional or security or civil rights issues. We simply cannot treat millions of people differently just because they happen to belong to a fucked up religion.
And that's what this is really all about. These people worship a certain way, so we get to treat them in a way which would be unacceptable to treat Jews or Christians or Hindus or Mormons. That is not America. In America, if you're going to get your phone tapped, or your mail opened, or your body cavities searched at the airport, we cannot let a religious test determine it. Everybody needs to bend over and grab their ankles.
I am an atheist. I don't believe there is a Supreme Being, but I am absolutely convinced that all religions, with their rules and regulations and doctrines are not only mistaken, they are foolish and potentially dangerous. But even more dangerous is a State, or even an informal social movement, that feels it is justified in going after a specific religion simply because it is a religion. Once we let that happen, no one is safe, no matter what they believe.
"First they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew...."
As for all those Liberals who are allegedly covering up for Muslims and making excuses for them...well, that's a very small price to pay for that freedom.
