The jihadist movements and the conservative base.

It's long been known that the Conservatives like to have abortion issues and homosexual rights including marriage on as many ballots as possible. These issues with their religious implications can stir up their portion of the electorate to the point of voting, at which time they'll tend to vote a straight ticket. And anyone who dies defending that faith, presumably even someone who might kill an abortion worker and be executed, becomes a martyr and heads off straight to heaven. Realities of fundamental Christiandom.

And in the Middle East, it is religion which generates the energy, the jihads, and the suicide bombers who die defending their faith. Said bombers are also headed straight to heaven. (I don't know if it is the same heaven, wherein some super-UN has imposed a very effective truce.)

There isn't much difference between the Robertsons, the Grahams and other fundamental Protestants and the various mullahs and ayatollahs. Both are hellbent upon imposing their religious views upon all people within their reach whether those folks like it or not and using the powers of the State to enforce those religious convictions. There can be no doubt that if the Conservative base had it's way there would be an Old Testament basis for the law in the US, just as there is Koranic law in the Middle East.
