Oil Companies have our Mortgage, food monies

Kids had a good point today as we discussed the rapid inflation of food, etc and slump in the housing market, seems the kid drew the notion that the rising costs of petro products skewed the shift in money to the oil companies and while were OK in feeding the tykes, alot of people cut back and literally drove themselves to the poorhouse by spending bucks for gas and some even max-xing out their credit cards just to get to work or maintain a lifestyle. Any logic in this?
