The state of the economy is the result of policies that have been in place for a very long time, and both parties share the blame (although in my opinion, not equally!). It doesn't matter who wins this election, they are not going to be able straighten out the mess overnight, especially since the long term medicine required is difficult to swallow. In fact, I believe whoever wins this election, regardless of how good a job they do, is going to jinx their party for a generation.
I've never been more prosperous than I am right now, and mostly because of the way the economy has been run in order to court my vote in the past; and although I realize my condition doesn't necessarily correlate with everyone else's, or reflect the state of the economy as a whole, the rest of the electorate does not feel that way. No one wants to hear that what is called for is sacrifice and hard times now in order to make it easier for everyone in the future. In fact, we have been running the economy of this nation as if there was no future.
As a nation, I think we will simply apply for yet another credit card and we will blame the President when the bank finally says "No".
