3 new cars
This is such a farce. In 1980, the range of the electric cars being produced was 80-100 miles per charge with top speed of 70mph. These specs were from the "Silver Volt" - a rebodied Buick Century complete with AC, power brakes, steering, electric windows and power seats. A low noise rotary engine extended the range 100 miles when required.
So not only was the technology offered 28 years ago BETTER than today's offering but it was offered 28 years ago!
The farce is when one knows what REALLY is available and which is being suppressed.
Why is it being suppressed? Why are automakers so reluctant to produce reliable and REALISTIC electric vehicles as alternatives to today's automobiles?
Price margins is one primary answer. The technology is far more expensive at this point and in comparision to the 90% profit made on some of today's SUVs - they don't want to move to a car that makes them 5% to 15% profit.
But they know that if they really went into production and refunneled stockholders money towards new plant retrofits they would quickly push that profit margin up.
So why wait? Why do none of those vehicles utilize solar technology to help recharge the battery as the car drives - or even when it is parked out in the sun. Why create a car with a 40 mile range that no one will want and which will FORCE the few buyers to use a gas engine anyways to extend the dismal range?
They can't possibly fear that electrics will offer them less servicing and back-end revenue, because these vehicles would be goldmines in repair costs.
Are the auto companies so beholden to oil influences that they don't have a free hand? Have they developed such a symbiotic relationship as they feed on the masses that they fear what will happen when they pull free of each the other? Is big oil raising gas prices to show automakers who their "daddy" is - and to browbeat/blackmail them from finally embracing electric in near totality? Are they afraid that if they emerge overnight with a total electric with a range of 500 miles (or more with solar employed) that the oil prices will plummet and Saudi sheiks will seek revenge?
These offerings are a joke. A very bad joke.
Chrysler & GM are run by a bunch of cowards and wimps.
