"You Walk Away" The car ownership disconnect.

Years and years ago I worked for a large private detective agency, first as an agent then as a supervisor. Since most of my activity was covert I didn't tell many people what I did. However, I did drink a lot, and my friends knew.

At a minimum of twice a month I'd get a call from a friend of a friend who would want me to steal their car and see to it the thing got totalled. Drive it into a lake, river, pole, strip it, whatever. The usual deal was that they would leave the key somewhere and wait a day to report it stolen. I could keep whatver I took from it. Occasionally there would be an offer of some cash thrown in. They had heard what I did and ascribed skills and connections I didn't have. They truly thought it was just barely off the page from my job description, a bit like a cab driver supplying after-hours booze or something.

These were people who went to a dealership to "just look", and wound up driving away with a car they couldn't afford at a price no one else would pay. After a very short while the bloom would be off and they'd be stuck owing much more than the depreciated car would bring. Even if they did sell it, the deficiency would be very large. (I don't know if insurance would cover the entire amount owed or not. I doubt it.)

I never did do it and I don't think anyone with whom I worked would but I did know some folks who didn't have such scruples. Or any scruples, really. However, I'd just plead ignorance and leave the folks to their own misery.
