Of the debate-watchers questioned in this poll, 41 percent of the respondents identified themselves as Democrats, 27 percent as Republicans and 30 percent as independents.

Apply that 38 percent who thought McCain to this other paragraph and you come up with an inescapable "Obama lost" because McCain is pulling in the majority of the independents.
