"Shock and Awe" - The Conservative Mind.

Over the last few years I've watched the twists and turns of Conservative politics with shock and awe. Easily able to simultaneously support contradictory positions, these minds are even aggressive about it.

First, the ostensible reasons for war in Iraq which the Conservatives have acted as if they believe.

Regime change, that's all they want, then that wasn't enough. Fearmongering followed, the "smoking gun being a muchroom cloud".
They got regime change. There was no nuclear program. WMDs followed, with cropdusters being launched from merchant ships. That fell apart.
Next, democracy for Iraq and the entire Middle East. Then just Iraq. Then "stability". Winning turned into "success", whatever that is.

Conservatives moved seamlessly from one position to the next without looking back. Every spin iteration was greeted with enthusiasm even as the last was proven to be wrong.

Moving to the domestic side, there was the scheme for tax cuts for the wealthy. First, it was "class warfare" to deny them cuts. Second, there was a surplus, it was their money. Give it back. Next there was a deficit, a recession, and tax cuts were necessary in that case so as to create jobs. Those didn't materialize as the result of the tax cut, but it didn't matter. The cut was important, not jobs.

As has been noted it's the Democrats they are blaming for the financial crisis. Disregarding Republican control over everything, Republican fiscal policies, Republican Big Government, deficits, it's the Democrats who are responsible.

And finally, Palin. The Supreme Insult to the American people and the world. And Conservatives follow right along endorsing that pathetic politician, Cheney's philosophy and George Bush's eloquence wrapped up in a selfish, venal female without the sense to turn down a job for which she is completely unqualified.

And yet some Conservatives find it well within their mental flexibility to accept this lady as viable. In fact, they seem to believe that Obama doesn't have the experience to be President, but Palin does. Conservatives love Reagan, the actor, Bush, the cheerleader, and now Palin, the what? I'm afraid to guess.

The Conservative Mind is well worth studying. How a rigid ideologue, unbending, can also wrap themselves around such nonsense is worthy of a couple of hundred Ph. D. dissertations.

Was it Lincoln who said, "You can fool some of the people all of the time"? I wouldn't have thought it was the same people, over and over and over.
