New converts always see things in black and white. I don't know the Brit environmental scene, but there's a substantial minority of enviros in the US who are either cautious supporters of nukes, others willing to include nukes as part of broader deal on climate change (Obama, for one), and cautious, non-rabid skeptics (myself, not that I'm anyone important).
Breeder reactors have nuclear proliferation concerns, and nuke power is very expensive. It's also subsidized - if a windmill hits someone in the head, they can sue as much as they're damaged, but if a nuke plant melts down, the cost to the company is limited so that you and I can pay for our own radiation treatments.
