using his fame to quick his way into a crew slection for the Moon (what other astronaut could ask to be moved from Apollo 13 to 14 and claim commandment of a flight when he only had 15 minutes more flight experience than the 2 rookies who'd fly with him) didn't go that well into posterity.
The second astronaut selection was and still is the best in NASA's history! Not the first.
