Not as dry as Las Vegas, but...

... at our cabin (52 46 22 N, 120 49 40 W), we are about 35 miles from the nearest town in any direction (an area of almost 4000 sq. miles!), so when it's clear, it is REALLY dark. Someday I will have to lug my telescope up there in the boat, but in the meantime going out on the lake at night is spectacular.... sometimes you can't tell earth/lake from sky (there are reflections of stars on the lake) so it feels like you are floating in space.

Not exactly related to darkness, but last summer I had an absolutely breathtaking sight up there. It was late dusk and I had just walked up to the cabin from the shore. I looked to the east and Mount Watt (8190 ft) with it's glaciers was glowing in the diffuse light from a mostly finished cloudless sunset. The mountain has a deep notch on it's southern side, and I literally gasped when I saw that a brilliant jewel was set in the notch. Jupiter was rising in exactly the right spot, nestled in the arms of the mountain, it's intensity somehow magnified by the surrounding snow and rock.

Sigh - won't be back there til late next spring now.
