That seems pretty bad. Below are the raw numbers and calculations.

1-20-01 DJIA 10,588
S & P 1343

10-8-08 DJIA 9258
S & P 985

Inflation figured at 17% since 2001

DJIA 9258/10588 = $870 X 17% inflation = $726

S & P 985/1343 = $733 X 17% inflation = $609
