I'm not reading about George Bush talking about what a help John has been, or seeing Dick and Sarah, shotguns in hand, arms around each others shoulders yucking it up for the crowd. For that matter I haven't read much from Rice, though early on she was appalled by the choice of Palin. Rumsfeld hasn't been making the circuit, neither has Gates. (I understand Fed employees are constrained, but that's never stopped them before.)
Haven't read anything recently about Bill Clinton supporting his old buddy Obama, or Hillary commenting how her old friend Joe and she had been forces for good in the Senate. It would be a shame if they were perceived as trying to set up their own agenda for 2012 rather than work for the good of the country.
