Just some things to keep in mind, Mars is not Earth and Earth is not Mars. Mars doesn't have a magnetosphere as Earth does to veer off or even destroy incoming meteorites. On the other hand Mars IS closer to the asteroid belt and has it's own in-comings of its own and not much of an atmosphere to hinder them off.
