re: Public and private money for space

Well it actually says:
"The Ariane 5 programme is a central element of Europe’s space policy and a fine commercial achievement that has captured over 50% of the launch market for satellites in geostatonary orbit."

And in another article is says:
"Ariane 5 – fourth launch this year

8 October 2007
On the evening of 5 October, an Ariane 5 GS launcher lifted off from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana on its mission to place two telecommunications satellites into geostationary transfer orbits."

So, with 4-6 launches per year and perhaps two GEO birds each, Ariane 5 is doing very well.

Sea Launch is doing ok too. It's launch failure in January 30, 2007, put it back a bit, but so far in 2008, it's had 5 successful launches:

Obviously launching near the equator is a good idea, particularly if the destination is GEO.
But most people don't regard Sea launch as the US space program- though maybe they should.
