"What happens to people who have never heard of *religion* and God?...or gods.....Do they create their own belief system...hmmm...yes I believe so...the Native Americans did.
Why are we so compelled to create an explanation?"
Well, I think it's likely there is a god- so that obviously provides an answer to your question.
But let's assume there isn't a god and answer the question.
People have to make decisions. They need to assign values to these the options of these decisions. E.g. that is a good choice and the other is a bad choice.
Now, rather than simply watching other people [including your children] make "bad" choices, you can tell someone what is a good choice and what is a bad choice.
But when you do that, the person will ask you, why is that choice good or bad?
Hence: God
God is an easier answer.
And god is the only way to develop a system of providing answers about what choices one should make, because god is simply a supreme value.
Anything which functions as a supreme value is a god.
Nature can be a god. It is actually a very common god.
Luck can be a god. Etc.
